They're versatile and shockingly comfortable.
Despite never having seen an episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, there are two things I know to be true about it. First, the moment the camera zooms out you’ll realize Barrymore herself is mere inches from the guest and holding their hand, and secondly, her stylist deserves a Daytime Emmy.
Each time a clip from the show finds itself on my social media feed, the first thing I notice isn’t the lack of personal space or the celebrity guest that’s so charmed they’ve pretty much become the heart-eye emoji, but instead, Barrymore’s outfits. She has perfected modern, cool-girl business wear with undone ties, oversized blazers, platform pumps, and pencil skirts that don’t feel stuffy—is it too soon to crown her TV’s chicest talk show host? But there’s one thing she wears time and again that I love the most because, well, I also repeatedly wear it.
When the actress and host was spotted in New York yesterday, she was rocking that very style I’m completely obsessed with: oversized trousers. The pants sat high and fitted at her waist before billowing out into a dramatically oversized wide leg, and I loved every moment of it. She belted the pants to cinch the waist even further—pro move—and wore a button-down, tie, and cropped blazer that barely grazed the top of her trousers. It was proportionally perfect.

While Barrymore’s modern suit in its entirety likely doesn’t make sense for most people’s day-to-day lives, there are elements of the look I think every wardrobe should have. Namely, those pants.
Wide-leg trousers have become so reached-for in my closet that, at this point, they’re pretty much a wardrobe basic for me. The roominess through the thighs was the first reason I ever tried on a pair, but the way the pants make even the simplest of tops feel chic is the reason I keep wearing them. The style pairs sophistication with a laid-back nature, meaning that it can be paired and look good with almost anything. I often wear them with something as every day as a white T-shirt—the casualness tones down the dressiness for an overall cool look—but they can just as easily be dressed up with a blouse, fitted bodysuit, or heels. They’re pants you can wear everywhere, every season, and that’s exactly what I do.
Barrymore’s seriously big wide-leg pants are the comfortable and versatile closet staple I wear over and over again. Shop more trousers inspired by her chic business wear look, below.
