In the 2009 Nancy Meyers film It’s Complicated, Meryl Streep plays a Santa Barbara bakery owner who has a clandestine affair with her ex-husband, played by Alec Baldwin. The costume department outfitted Streep like a true (affluent) American Riviera resident, decking her out in whites, linens, and lightweight button-ups. While this style may have been dubbed the “Coastal Grandma” in 2022, we think it’s more accurately Nancy Meyers-core.
Today, Streep swapped the American Riviera for the French Riviera, and readopted Meyers’s aesthetic for the occasion. The actor, who is being celebrated with an honorary Palme d’Or at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, donned a bright white Michael Kors Collection pantsuit featuring sharp shoulders, high waisted trousers, and tapered pant legs. Under her summery blazer, she wore a blue-and-white striped button up, left open at the top, creating a sense of effortlessness that only a woman who bakes chocolate croissants with her new architect lover (Steve Martin) could know.
Elevating her look—and playing by the festival’s high heels mandate—she added a pair of towering metallic silver stilettos with a pointed toe. The eye-catching shoe matched her silver hoop earrings. With her oversized hat and cat-eye sunglasses, Streep looked like a more glam version of her character, Jane, who tended to her lush garden in a straw hat.
Seeing Meryl Streep embracing her inner Nancy Meyers protagonist on the French Riviera is making us crave another film from the two of them. Or, at least, a fabulous sunhat.
