As one of this evening’s official Met Gala cohosts, Zendaya was bound to deliver a memorable fashion moment on the red carpet—and the A-list star certainly didn’t disappoint. Styled by Law Roach, the actor wore not one but two striking ensembles this evening.
For her first walk up the Met steps, Zendaya wore an ocean blue gown by Maison Margiela’s John Galliano that included a matching dramatic headpiece (by Stephen Jones for Margiela). The haute couture ensemble was composed of a sage lamé and organza bias-cut dress worn over a duchesse satin corset. The dress also featured bands of hand-painted metallic crin, iridescent organza, and a hand-embroidered corsage.
It was a fitting choice for this year’s Garden of Time dress code, which encouraged guests to slip into thematic fashions that paid tribute to the natural world. In her mounds of tulle and fabric, she was reminiscent of the ocean—and the look felt just as refreshing as a summer-day dip.
For her second look, Zendaya opted for vintage: She stepped out in a never-before-worn vintage Givenchy couture from its spring 1996 collection, one of two collections that Galliano designed for the house. (The dress was sourced from Lily et Cie and happens to be from the year Zendaya was born.)
Tonight’s look adds to the many winning fashion moments Zendaya has brought to the Met Gala over the years. In 2017 she embraced opulent florals in an off-the-shoulder Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda ball gown. In 2018 she transformed into a modern Joan of Arc in a custom Versace armor creation. When it comes to the Met carpet, Zendaya is all about keeping us guessing—but one thing is for certain: She will always turn heads. Clearly, she did it again tonight.
