The early 2000s were a makeup artist’s dream come true. There were frosted lips, glossy lids, and skinny brows. Plus, it was the peak of the mega-bronzed look thanks to the decade’s emphasis on skin, skin, and more skin.
Here, scroll through 25 of the most quintessential early 2000s makeup looks and get pro tips for how to recreate them for today.
Glow Up
“Angelina’s look really leans into an overall sun-kissed and bronzed look,” shares Egan. “Her skin has a natural glow, and she subtly emphasizes her lips with a natural pink lipstick and gloss.” To get a similar glow, Egan recommends applying bronzing drops to your fingers and gently blending them into the skin all over. “Don’t finish with powder or anything that will make the skin look matte—you want that shimmery look overall,” she says.
Natural Flush
“Natalie’s early 2000s makeup look feels current because she looks flushed and natural overall—her skin looks flawless, but with some texture, and her lips are a natural shade,” explains celebrity makeup artist Sarah Egan. “You’re also drawn to her eyes because they’re done in a way to make them pop.” It’s an easy look to recreate, shares Egan. Start with a skin tint, like Hi Beautiful You Be You Skin Skin Perfecting Tint ($48). “Apply with your fingers and gently blend, then add a bit of bronzer along the perimeter of the face,” she adds.
Lip Service
“Her blush ties this look together,” says celebrity makeup artist Gianpaolo Ceciliato. “For this, try Le Rouge Français The Cream Blush Cheek and Lips in Zenobie ($29) “Next, to get a similar payoff, try the staple lip liner of the early 2000s that was a must—MAC Spice Lip Liner Pencil ($24), accompanied by Le Rouge Français Le Nude ($45).”
Perfect Pairing
“Nicole’s look is all about blush, and with so many gorgeous liquid blushes to choose from now, you can easily recreate the look and make it feel like your own,” says Egan. “She also pairs the blush with a lipstick-and-lip-gloss combo in a similar but not exactly matching shade, which makes her blue eyes pop.” Look for a mauve shade with a matte finish, then apply the blush to the back of your hand and use your fingers to lightly dab it onto the apples of your cheeks.
Dark Side
According to Egan, the reason this look draws you in is because Demi’s eyes pop. “She really went for a look that focused on the eyes with beautiful natural skin and a natural lip,” she explains. “She picked an eyeshadow shade that was bolder, leaning toward a bronze and orange tone, but what makes it work is that it brings out the hazel and bronze tones in her eyes—it’s beautiful.” Egan recommends using a light matte brown shadow with an orange undertone and applying it all over the top lid, blending upward above the crease. Next, “take a black eyeliner and tightline the upper and lower lash lines and finish with multiple coats of black mascara on the top and bottom lashes,” she says.
Golden Touch
“Cindy’s look is shimmery all over, which is the inspiration for a lot of looks now, especially for spring,” explains Egan. “She chose a warm, shimmery gold bronzer versus a more brown, bronzy shade.”
Lit-from-Within Skin
“Her skin is that natural, looks-like-skin finish, which never goes out of style,” says Carly Giglio, a makeup artist in New York City. “Then it’s finished with a peek of eyeliner and a just-more-than-your-lip-shade color—this is an effortless, out-the-door look.” Giglio recommends using a skin tint, such as HausLabs Triclone Skintech Foundation ($45), to achieve the same type of healthy, natural finish complexion.
Line Dance
“Drew wears a diffused sultry, smoky eye with a hint of grunge,” explains Giglio. “But what makes it look even better is it’s balanced with a nude lip to let the eye be the star.” She says to use an eyeliner like Victoria Beckham Satin Kajal Liner ($32), which blends easily to recreate this. Next, top with a similar shade of eyeshadow for dimension and finish with a mascara like Arbonne Elevate Mascara ($41).
Midas Touch
Here, Ceciliato points attention to the blend of burgundy, beige, and brown tones Beyoncé is wearing. He says that in the 2000s, there was a major emphasis on glowier looks with browns and darker earth tones. Why? “It was a way of looking more sophisticated and expensive; that is what everyone wanted at that time—to look expensive,” he explains.
Color Theme
“This pop of color on the lips and the monochromatic cheek color is timeless,” says Giglio. “Her color choice accentuates her eyes and is effortless on top of glowing skin.” She suggests choosing a lip-and-cheek product, like Neen Going Rouge Cheek + Lip Color ($29), “to get that monochromatic look,” she says.
Bright Eyes
“We still know and love this look because it looks made up, but not overdone,” says Giglio of Linday’s signature makeup vibe. “She has the brighter under the eye, which you can use a corrector like Bobbi Brown Skin Corrector Stick ($30) for, topped with a fuller coverage concealer like Hourglass Vanish Airbrush Concealer ($18).” To complete the look, “finish with a glowing cheek like Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Luminous Powder Blush ($26) and a frosted lip like Maybelline Lifter Gloss ($11).”
Show Stopper
This pretty much sums up the early 2000s J Lo era. “I think the 2000s really solidified Jennifer Lopez as a beauty icon—she made people want to wear makeup!” says Avendaño. “This look is so 2000s, but also completely wearable today with its soft pastels and icy tones on the lids.” Another key element: “The super highlighted inner corners and under eyes were her trademark and are so flattering because it gives a refreshed and rested look,” he says.
Bare Minimum
“This look is still very in right now—it’s that sunkissed minimal makeup look letting the freckles show through,” says Giglio. “Use a creamy, buildable bronzer like the Makeup by Mario SoftSculpt Transforming Skin Enhancer ($32) to build in a W-shape across the top of the cheeks and bridge of the nose for a fresh-from-the-sun look. If you want to create faux freckles, use a brow pen like NYX Lift and Snatch! Brow Tint Pen ($13) to “dot freckles, then lightly dab with your fingers to soften for a more natural look,” she says.
Perfect Match
“Early 2000s makeup made use of more earthy colors, like beige and nudes, which you can see clearly with Linda,” says Ceciliato.
Gleam Team
According to Avendaño, this trademark Tyra Banks face needs to hit the red carpet ASAP. “Tyra always gave us the 2000s smoky eye that went above the crease and finished with that frosty highlight right under the brow—it’s so beautifully placed, and I’m on a mission to bring it back!” he says.
Glam Goals
“This look on Reese Witherspoon is all about glowy skin with smoky eyes,” says Ceciliato. “Before this era, skin was always very powdered, but the early 2000s brought out the look of beautiful, flawless skin, and makeup artists began to prioritize skin care.”
In the Details
“In the early 2000s, eyes were always the focus. When it came to eyeshadow, it was all about smudged looks, dark liners, and lots of mascara on the lashes,” explains Ceciliato.
Get Cheeky
This is undeniably Cameron Diaz’s signature fresh and youthful look. “A key factor is that she is highlighting her cheekbones and lips with a vibrant fuchsia color,” says Claudia Bentancur, a makeup artist in Miami, Florida for L’Oreal Paris. “This makeup is on trend with more berry tones, giving a lot of life to our face and a very healthy appearance,” says Bentancur, who recommends applying L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Satin in 153 ($7) with your fingertips on both the lips and cheeks to recreate a similar vibe.
Rusty Warmth
“All hail Queen Rihanna, who always looks perfect in every decade,” says Avendaño. “What’s not to love about this? It can still be worn today with its perfect intense cat eye with rusty earth tones on the lid to add depth and bring out her eyes. Plus, there's the spontaneous subtle tones of frosty color on the inner corner of her eyes—this was a trick always pulled out during the early 2000s that we should play with now.”
Smokeshow
Here, Ashlee Simpson nails the 2000s-era smoky eye. “A smoky eye adds a seductive and mysterious allure to the eyes,” says Bentancur. “Here, it’s a standout feature of the look as it creates depth and intensity, making the eyes the focal point of the face.”
Eye Opener
According to Bentacur, Jessica Simpson’s makeup is a true 2000s moment. “I love this look!” she says. “It highlights her eyes very well with lots of mascara, which makes the gaze appear more open.” To achieve this same look, try L’Oreal Paris Panorama Mascara ($17).
Second Skin
In 2001, Paris Hilton rocked a mega smoky eye that is still on trend today. “With a structured smoky eye, she manages to give prominence to her blue eyes,” explains Bentancur, who also notes her glowy complexion. “She has a satin-like skin, which is very trendy.” Level up your glow by adding a few drops of L’Oreal Paris Lumi Glotion ($17) into your go-to foundation.
Shine On
Mariah Carey rocks golden skin, frosty lips, and skinny eyebrows effortlessly. “There are so many gorgeous lipsticks with frosty or metallic hues that I think people are intimidated by and shouldn’t be,” says Avendaño. “I love that she kept things light with rosy cheeks and a hint of sun-kissed skin.”
Line Up
A 2000s icon, Kate Moss shows off her signature defined, yet slightly smudged eye. “You can easily achieve this cool look, too,” says Bentancur. “But first, you have to consider using an eyeliner that doesn’t smudge everywhere—opt for an all-black gel liner and then blend it between your lashes.” Try the L’Oreal Paris Infallible Grip Mechanical Gel Eyeliner in Black ($9).
Lash Out
The ultimate cool girl, Gwyneth Paltrow shows her edgier side at the 2002 Vanity Fair Oscar Party. “Several coats of mascara with gray, silver, and taupe tones smoked out around her eyes not only made her eyes stand out but were done in a timeless way that’s still totally wearable today,” says Allan Avendaño, a makeup artist for L’Oreal Paris.
