"How I wept in our fitting!!!!"
No, that’s not an ethereal woodland fairy who just performed at the 2024 Met Gala—it’s just Ariana Grande, although you’d be forgiven for confusing her with some sort of magical nymph considering her dreamy green gown.
The pop star arrived at the Met Gala in style wearing a mother-of-pearl Loewe dress. As she later explained, the dress was a nod to her Wicked character, Glinda, who famously travels by bubble. After she ascended the iconic Metropolitan Museum of Art steps, Grande slipped into a second dress that she wore for her surprise performance inside the venue.
Ariana Grande’s Iridescent 2024 Met Gala Dress Had a Secret Nod to Glinda
Grande's second dress of the evening was truly divine. A floaty green frock by John Galliano for Maison Margiela, the dress featured layer upon layer of sheer, sea-green fabric, giving it a luscious, hazy look. The long, gloved sleeves featured soft, painterly strokes of blue and purple, which bled into shades of green. The overall effect was an artistic, woodsy vision, and it doesn't get dreamier than this.
The singer took to Instagram to share her thoughts on the breathtaking gown and her performance. “Had the honor and most special time performing at @metmuseum in @maisonmargiela by the one and only, most brilliant angel of all [John Galliano] (how I wept in our fitting!!!!)” she gushed in the caption. She went on, “Working on this performance was an experience I will cherish forever.”
The First Look at Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo as Glinda and Elphaba in 'Wicked' Is Here
She concluded with a message to Cynthia Erivo, who stars opposite her in the upcoming Wicked adaptation as Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West. “Last but most ~certainly~ not least, thank you to the divine and magical @cynthiaerivo for joining me in the end and for lighting up the museum brighter than any star in the sky ever could,” she wrote. “It was my honor to have you and to sing with you as always. I love you!”
Grande's performance included renditions of the singer's songs "7 Rings", "Into You," and "We Can't Be Friends." Toward the end of the performance, she was joined by Erivo, and the pair sang a version of "When You Believe," a duet that was originally sung by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston.
Erivo wore a bright pink gown for her duet with Grande, and the pair swapped their characters' signature colors of pink and green. Grande later posted an image of the pair on her Instagram Stories and quoted the famous Wicked line, writing, "Pink goes good with green."
