For over the past decade, celebrity colorist Rita Hazan has been the genius behind Beyoncé’s blonde strands. While changing up the star’s look, Hazan knows exactly what to do to make sure her hair stays healthy.
"Because I've been doing her hair for so long, I know the pull and push with her hair, and what it can take and what it can't take," says Hazan. "So I just always try to keep her hair healthy no matter what."
While the star does make use of wigs and extensions, she also loves wearing her natural hair. And it's so healthy, that by looking, it's easy to assume it's not hers. "Her hair is thick and it's long—it can be mistaken for a wig easily, and it has been," says Hazan. And while Hazan has known how long and strong Beyoncé's hair is—and now that she posted a video of her natural hair, the rest of the world does, too.
"I'm so excited that she did that video, because for all this time, I've been like 'She has the most beautiful hair ever. It really is thick and long.' And nobody believed me. So hallelujah, she finally posted something!"
Hazan says the most important step in keeping Beyoncé's hair healthy is making sure she doesn't over-process it. "We try to do it every three months instead of every month," says Hazan. "Plus, she does treatments in between. She's a very good client because she really does take care of her hair."
And now with Cécred, Beyoncé’s hair-care line, Hazan says the singer’s hair is in amazing shape. “Because she’s been doing her research and development with these products, her hair is stronger, healthier, and shinier. Her products do work, and we use them when we color her hair.” Her favorite is the Fermented Rice and Rose Protein Ritual ($52), a restorative treatment that instantly strengthens and smooths hair. “I love it,” says Hazan. “I use it right after I colored her hair.”
Incorporating nourishing products into her routine allows her to play with her hair without damage. "She switches her hair all the time," says Hazan. "All the time. I mean, we all see her — every minute is something else. Every minute it's lighter, darker, longer, shorter. She comes from a salon background, so she's playful in that way and she isn't afraid to try new things, which I love, love, love."
Although we're all living for Bey's current platinum locks, she has rocked many different hues over the years, below, join us on a stroll down memory lane.

Sun Washed
The sun-washed color Beyoncé wore for most of her Renaissance tour is a shade we’re accustomed to seeing. It’s warm and pretty while adding lightness around her face.

Ombré
In this look from 2014, Bey kept the bright tones toward the ends of her strands with an ombré style that went from a muted cool-toned brown to blonde.
Honey Hues
Beyoncé rocked this golden shade to the 2005 Vanity Fair Oscar Party. It’s an early adaptation of the honey-blonde shade that has become her signature.
