I remember when I first started working as a fashion designer, I wanted to design dresses, skirts, and woven tops, but instead, I was placed with tees and tank tops — the basics. I was so confused on why someone would need to focus on just these two styles, because T-shirts and tank tops have such a simple look. I quickly learned the intricacies that go into designing these everyday basics, and I even soon discovered that I struggled more with tank tops, as it’s about more than just the fabric; you have to think about all the things like if there’s a bra within the shell, the the neckline, how deep the armholes go, the thickness of the straps, and so much more.
This gave me an eye for spotting quality tank tops pretty quickly, and I was soon able to curate a collection of high-quality styles from Spanx, Madewell, J.Crew, Aritzia, and more that I think all have the makings of the perfect tank tops. I am kind of, sort of an expert, after all. Shop my favorites that are so good, I would buy them again, below.

Spanx Better Base Scoop-Neck Tank Top
Buy on Spanx $48
Two things Spanx always gets right is the baby-soft fabric and the made-for-every-body fit, and that’s no exception with its Better Base Scoop-Neck Tank Top. It comes in black and white, and in sizes XS to 3XL. It has a scooped neckline in the front and back, wide straps that can conceal bra straps, and it’s made from a super stretchy fabric that’s quick drying and won’t pill over time. The fit is body skimming and has a length that falls to the hip when completely stretched out.
Artfish Tank Top
Buy on Amazon $20
During the summer months, Artfish’s tank top is my go-to that I usually wear on its own with my mini denim skirts and shorts. The thin overlapping straps are so flattering and the material is nice and thick, so even the lighter shades aren’t sheer. I plan on stocking my closet with the everyday tank ahead of summer because there’s so many colors to choose from — 39 to be exact. It has a close-to-the-body fit, stretchy ribbed fabric, a scooped neckline in the front and back, and a length that stops at the hip, making it perfect for tucking.
Aritzia Contour Square-Neck Cami Tank Top
Buy on Aritzia.com $40
If you want to build out at tank top collection you can be proud of, you need a style that’s great for layering and that’s Aritzia’s Contour Square-Neck Cami Tank Top. It comes in five classic colors and sizes 2XS to XL. It has a square neckline, adjustable spaghetti straps, and double layered, extra stretchy fabric that offers a great deal of support without a bra, a second skin-like feel, and extra coverage.
