Sydney Sweeney has been on everyone’s mind lately, from her Anyone But You press tour to her Immaculate looks. But now, we’re left wondering: What will she wear to the 2024 Met Gala? The Emmy-nominated actor has attended the star-studded event twice before—last year with Miu Miu and with Tory Burch in 2022.
Known for her personal style that vacillates between hyper-feminine and über-sexy, Sweeney has a host of options at her fingertips for fashion’s biggest night. This year’s theme, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” could allow her to lean into either of those briefs.
While the dress code will focus on how technology can enliven clothing too fragile to wear again, guests will be asked to adhere to the theme “The Garden of Time,” based on J.G. Ballard’s short story. Although there are lots of more esoteric elements at play, it’s safe to say we’re expecting lots and lots of florals.
So while we may not know what Sydney Sweeney is wearing to this year’s Met Gala—if she goes, of course—we’ve put our stylist hat on and made some suggestions ourselves.
Valentino spring 2013 couture
While the theme is “The Garden of Time,” many people may be fixated on the garden’s contents rather than what contains it. But with the story so focused on keeping the palace’s inhabitants separated from the people outside, we’d love to see Sweeney play with something a little more subversive than just the botanical elements. This stunning cape from Valentino’s spring 2013 couture collection resembles a wrought-iron gate that is more than grand enough for the Met Gala.
Zuhair Murad spring 2002 haute couture
This couture masterpiece is equal parts sweet and sexy—totally up Sweeney’s alley. While such an ab-baring look may seem a bit far-fetched for the Met Gala, who can forget Lady Gaga’s several outfit changes during “Camp” which ended with the singer in her underwear? With that precedent set, why not make some jaws drop on the 2024 Met carpet?
Marni spring 2024
Marni’s zany cutout prints were the source of much delight during the spring 2024 show. We know Sweeney can do classic, Old Hollywood glamour like a pro, so it would be fun to see her go against type and wear something funky like this 3D floral cornucopia.
Alexander McQueen spring 2007
McQueen’s “Sarabande” collection produced endless Met-appropriate options, but Sweeney would look especially fabulous in this one. With flowers winding up the dress and overflowing from the arm holes and neckline, she would resemble an overgrown—designer—garden.
