It's official — this year, the LBD is going backless.
The LBD is a wardrobe staple — an icon of the fashion world that will always be a red carpet win. But as Olivia Wilde's latest daring take on the little black dress proves, there's always room to tweak a classic.
Wilde appeared at the opening of Tiffany & Co.'s exhibit, "Tiffany Wonder," in Tokyo, where she wore a strapless midi black dress. From the front, the dress appeared to be a simple, loose-fitting shift — but it was a different story from the side and the back. The dress was actually completely backless, held up only by a sheer piece of fabric around her upper back.
She accessorized with statement gold Tiffany & Co. jewelry and a pair of strappy black heels.
Wilde officially nailed the little black dress — and she also nailed the backless little white dress last year, when she wore a scoop-back wedding dress to a friend’s wedding “just so she could make a joke about it in her toast.”
Wilde is not the first celeb to make the case for the backless LBD — in the past few years, a number of other celebrities have gone for the simple-in-the-front, fun-in-the-back look. In January, Nicole Kidman wore a black dress with a strikingly similar silhouette, featuring a daring side slit and ultra-low plunging back. Hailey Bieber also nailed the backless LBD look, wearing a sheer minidress that showed off her black bra earlier this year. Last September, Emma Watson donned a classic LBD that dipped low in the back, and last July, Dua Lipa wore a similar number with white straps. In short, the LBD is officially going backless.
