Is Jennifer Lopez using fashion to address her critics?
People online have recently called the singer’s authenticity into question, proclaiming that she’s too far removed from her “Jenny from the Block” persona. J.Lo—who is rarely seen without a Birkin, oversized sunglasses, and a personalized, bedazzled cup—employed her outfit to do the heavy lifting.
A picture is worth a thousand words, as they say, and nothing could possibly say more than wearing a pair of dirt-washed, distressed barrel-legged jeans—presumably a pair from Acne Studios that sit in the $600-800 range. But Lopez swapped out a member of her extensive Hermès bag collection for a more modest (relatively speaking) alternative: a light blue quilted Chanel flap bag.
The rest of the blue-toned look was classic J.Lo territory. She layered a tight indigo turtleneck underneath a navy double-breasted trench coat, and wore a pair of pointy-toe denim stiletto boots. And—perhaps most true to form—no patented Jennifer Lopez outfit is complete without a pair of chunky earrings and oversized sunglasses. (Today’s pairing: gold hoops and square, gradient lenses.)
So is Jennifer Lopez wearing her dirt-washed, distressed jeans with her Chanel flap to tell the critics that she doesn’t care what they think of her? Or is she simply just mixing working class aesthetics with symbols of luxury?
