In 2019, there was a short-lived rumour that Hunter Schafer and Rosalía had a romantic dalliance. The hope outweighed the evidence: most of which revolved around Rosalía thanking Schafer during an acceptance speech at the 2020 Billboard Women In Music Awards. There were also a couple of images and videos of the duo that seemed to capture the natural intimacy of two people whose skin might have touched. But were these not the documents of the ultimate female friendship?
It turns out the rumors were true. In a new interview published in GQ, Schafer confirmed that she and Rosalía had dated for about five months in the fall of 2019. “There’s been so much speculation for so long,” she said. “Part of us just wants to get it over with, and then another part is like, ‘It’s none of anybody’s fucking business! It’s something I’m happy to share. And I think she feels that way too.” As someone who has written this, this and this about the clothes well-known couples get photographed in, Hunter’s admission was bittersweet: I am pleased that this thing happened, but I am also disappointed that two of the most successful dressers in romantic history will be overshadowed with all the discourse that collects around the Biebers’s mismatched wardrobes.
This was perhaps the best-dressed couple that pop culture never knew about, the Lily-Rose Depp and 070 Shake of the pre-pandemic world. Take, for example, their most recent–and very much platonic–outing in Los Angeles earlier this year: Hunter dressed in an Undercover bomber and Maison Margiela jeans with Prada lace-ups, Rosalía in a distressed Acne Studios blazer and Marc Jacobs’s lug-soled Margaret boots. No clickbait styling, just good clothes. Even in 2019–which is a time arguably before their respective fashion stars had reached their ascent–the duo sat front row at Burberry shows and wore coordinated tailoring to canoodle in green rooms. “I have really beautiful friendships with people that I was once romantically involved with,” Schafer added in that interview. And when it comes to Rosalía, “She’s family no matter what.”
