Why choose one when you can have both?
It’s technically spring, but trust me when I say, the weather has felt anything but, well, spring-y. Rain, snow, chill, winds — it’s just not the vibe for me, and I simply can’t wait for actual spring weather to arrive and stay. Until then, I’ll be bundled up in comfy winter coats, because that’s what I need to stay warm — but I’ll be thinking about Katie Holmes’ unexpected spring layering staple, because that’s what I need to mentally get through the next few (hopefully!) cold days.
Holmes never fails to serve up fashun, but in its most digestible form. Easygoing looks with jeans and tees or sweatpants and sneakers are tried-and-true to her NYC energy, and her latest Big Apple ensemble is right in line with that: easy, simple, comfy, but with a touch of sartorial edge that now has me itching to switch up my signature spring topper.
The actress was snapped out and about in New York City wearing a fuss-free three-piece look that included double denim (chic!), cool-girl flats (a spring must!), and a trusty tote (a Holmes signature!). She wore dark-wash flare jeans, which allowed her black Mary Jane flats to subtly peek out while still covering up her bare feet in the chill. A basic black tee provided a simple base, while that denim trench coat proved that combining two of your go-to spring jackets is better than choosing just one.

Jean jackets are a no-brainer for spring, as are trench coats. The two oftentimes compete for most popular seasonal staple, but TBH, the vibes are so different, I don’t really consider them coat competitors. A denim topper has a more nonchalant edge with a bit of retro flair, while a trusty trench coat oozes rich mom energy (see: Amal Clooney wearing one). But, here’s a bold twist: Imagine elements of both fuse into one? That’s Holmes’ latest outerwear.
A denim trench is the perfect combination of edgy yet elegant. The hard-edge fabric gives it a more rigid appearance, plus a bit more warmth than a traditional trench, while the flowy silhouette, signature lapels, and oversized buttons soften up the idea of a classic jean jacket. I particularly like how Holmes wore hers open over a pair of contrasting, darker-wash jeans, dressing it down with low-to-the-ground flats.
The Holmes-worn spring staple is inherently versatile, which means the styling options are practically endless. Wear it with jeans like she did or throw it over a dress for a juxtaposing combo. I’m grabbing one while I can, and I highly encourage you to get yourself a denim trench coat, too.
