I’ve always had dry, dull skin. No amount of moisturizer, no matter how thick, can give my skin a dewy look for more than a few minutes. For years I relied on oils to achieve a semblance of radiance, which mostly worked, but a recent visit to the dermatologist made me quit that habit cold turkey; the oil might have been helping me glow, but it was also clogging my acne-prone skin’s pores. It was back to the drawing board.
Immediately, I thought of pearlescent serums and tints, many of which I’ve tried without a ton of success. I’ve found that some give my skin way too much radiance — like I put highlighter on a giant powder puff and applied it from forehead to chin — while others’ “lustrous” finish are, well, lackluster. Many are just way too tan for my pale skin, too. However, I recently tested one that changed the game — and it’s on sale starting at just $8.

L’Oreal Paris’ True Match Lumi Glotion first appeared on my radar when Martha Stewart credited the drugstore primer for her all-over glow. Her makeup artist, Daisy Toye, has said she uses the product on Stewart “everyday,” and that it’s how she “gets that dewy look like she just got a facial.” At the time, I remember wanting to try it, while also feeling a bit defeated about similar products at higher price points. The snob in me thought, well if this $30 one doesn’t work, why would a cheaper one? Fortunately, I got over that, and my skin (and wallet) are grateful.

Available in four shades including fair, light, medium, and deep, this pearlescent primer is designed to give skin a subtle glow and boost of hydration (thank you glycerin and shea butter). Despite having alabaster skin that hasn’t seen the sun in months (let’s be honest, it’s not like I tan anyway) I reached for the light shade hoping to add some life to my ultra-pale complexion.
To my surprise, it worked beautifully. The color is slightly more bronze than my natural complexion, but rather than leaving me orange, it added a touch of healthy color. And thanks to its sheer formula, it looked like my skin had seen some sun rather than that I was wearing the wrong color foundation. “It has the most beautiful dewy glow and shine, and it doesn’t look cakey; it looks sunkissed and bronzed,” agreed another fan on Amazon.

While the L’Oreal Paris’ True Match Lumi Glotion offers a subtle blur — some shoppers swear by it for calming their hyperpigmentation — I definitely wouldn’t call it a foundation replacement. When applied, it is able to soften some of my discoloration, giving me an even base, but pimples definitely still peak through. On days when I want that no-makeup-makeup look, I apply this all over followed by my favorite concealer to cover what the Lumi Glotion can’t. But it’s also perfect to build upon; for even more coverage, I apply Chanel’s luminescent Les Beiges Water-Fresh Tint on top, a combo that’s hydrating and radiant. “Under foundation, it gives your skin a nice, healthy, and long-lasting glow,” said one person, while another said that they mix this with their foundation “every day” because it “enhances” and gives it “a glow.” It’s a little more coverage, but with that same light-catching finish.
