Including Rihanna-inspired ballet flats and a midi dress that’s bound to sell out.
I stepped outside this weekend in the same thick sweater I’d spent the last few months living in and felt my forehead, back, and armpits start to get… well, wet (sorry!). In a few sweaty seconds, it became clear that it was time to finally refresh my wardrobe for spring. Fortunately, I knew exactly where to start.
When Madewell launched its spring collection just a few weeks ago, I — a former employee turned obsessee — was adding tons of the new styles to my spring wishlist. The drop did what the brand does best, IMO, by taking a modern, cool-girl approach to wardrobe staples, and I was immediately in love with everything from its wide-leg linen pants to studded ballet flats. And with spring finally here, I’ve got the perfect excuse to start adding those staples to my cart.
In preparation for spring, this is everything I’m eyeing from Madewell’s newest drop, including elevated wardrobe basics and celebrity-approved denim styles:

Kick Out Crop Jeans
Buy on Madewell.com $138
I’ve spent the last couple years exclusively wearing wide-leg jeans, but celebrities including Jennifer Aniston and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley have convinced me to give the boot-cut silhouette a chance. That’s why I’m now eyeing this pair from Madewell; the Kick Out style features a mid-rise fit, cropped hem, and slight flare starting at the calf, all of which make the style “universally flattering,” per shoppers. One person called the pair the “most flattering jeans” they’ve owned “in years,” explaining that they give them “a nice shape.” Plus, fans say that the cropped hem “looks great” with everything, including booties, sneakers, and sandals.
The Greta Ballet Flat
Buy on Madewell.com $118
Studded ballet flats have been on my radar since Tracee Ellis Ross wore the modern take on the twee style in the fall. Rihanna has also given them her stamp of approval, so they’ve now gone from a want to a need. Luckily, Madewell just added a similar style to its lineup. This new Greta Ballet Flat is designed from leather that’s finished in a creamy white color and adorned with silver studs. And according to fans of the style, they’re “the most comfortable flats” you can own. “The cushioning inside was an unexpected plus — I don’t ever remember… ballet shoes being this comfortable,” raved one customer, while another said that “no break-in time was needed.” Of course, they’re also seriously chic, with one person writing that the flats are “elevated” and have “so much range,” noting that they make an outfit as simple as baggy jeans and a tank look cute.
The Melody Smocked Midi Dress
Buy on Madewell.com $110
Since dropping, more than 2,000 people have added this midi dress to their cart (including me). I adore almost everything about it, from the classic A-line silhouette to the flattering, smocked bodice and, of course, those pockets; it’s really simple but also incredibly elegant. For the early spring days, I love the idea of wearing this with a slightly oversized blazer and loafers. And thanks to its breezy, 100-percent cotton design, I also plan to wear it well into summer, something shoppers second. “This figure-flattering dress will be a go-to staple in my spring and summer capsules,” said one person, while another deemed it a “must for everyone’s closet.”
Button-Front Denim Jacket
Buy on Madewell.com $138
Last week, Julianne Moore reminded me that every spring wardrobe needs a denim jacket. The versatile style is the perfect layering piece for spring, looking just as good over your favorite breezy dress as it does with a pair of matching jeans, and I’m loving Madewell’s take on the timeless style. This jacket is a little boxy, slightly cropped, and features copper buttons and a subtly faded wash that gives the piece an almost vintage look. According to shoppers, the crop hits just at the waist, making it “perfect for high-waisted jeans.” Another customer said that the relaxed layering piece “adds a clean but casual touch to any outfit.”
With spring finally here, I’m officially starting my closet refresh. Shop more of the staples I’m grabbing from Madewell’s latest collection — including the linen version of my favorite wide-leg trousers and a slinky slip skirt — below.
