We’re well into Kristen Stewart’s Love Lies Bleeding press tour, and the veteran actor has managed to pull out nonstop surprises. No, she isn’t method dressing as an ’80s gym rat, but she’s taking risks with her fashion and trying out trends in ways that feel authentic to her.
Today, Stewart stepped out in New York City wearing her interpretation of the pantless trend. She wore a pair of cable-knit cream briefs with brown trim. Like yesterday’s unbuttoned vest look, she let her matching cream button-down from Brunello Cucinelli fly open, leaving only the very top button clasped. Completing the look were a pair of burgundy Le Silla pointy-toed pumps, Oliver Peoples sunglasses, and her quilted patent leather Chanel bag.
Stewart very intentionally let her undergarments show beneath her top layer of clothes. Her open shirt revealed a nude, wire-free bra, and under her sweater briefs she donned a pair of nude tights, letting the band around the thighs show. The visible bands tie back to her recent premiere look, where she wore an ultra-high cut bodysuit from Bettter, the control top on her black tights on display.
This is the latest in a series of shocking outfits from Stewart. Last night, while appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, she wore a black beaded halter from Mônot. While not the most unabashed naked look, her nipples were still very much visible between the rows of beads.
These looks, styled by Tara Swennen, read almost as commentary on the fashions du jour. Some of these trends—pantlessnes, naked dressing, and open blouses—are not the things most people feel comfortable wearing on the day-to-day. But seeing Stewart’s undergarments so proudly on display is a reminder that, even when movie stars do it, they face the same corporeal qualms as the rest of us.
