Jennifer Lawrence may not be a nominee at the 2024 Oscars, but that won’t stop her from dressing to the nines for the crown jewel of awards shows. To mark the occasion, Lawrence turned to Dior, with whom she has a longstanding relationship.
The ever-fashionable actor opted for a custom piece from Dior’s spring 2024 haute couture collection for the 96th Academy Awards, where she will serve as a presenter. She chose the closing dress, look 59, a strapless black number with white polka dots, complete with a matching stole, which jumped out at her as soon as it hit the runway. “When I first saw the dress on the runway I fell in love,” Lawrence tells Vogue. “Polka dots are classic and chic.”
She accessorized her look with a Swarovski lab-grown diamond tennis necklace and bracelet. An eternal red carpet struggle, Lawrence had to prioritize the contents of her tiny purse. With only so much real estate for makeup, she opted for the Dior Addict Lip Glow Oil. “My phone and lipstick is typically all that fits,” she says.
While it may be a simple, clean look, it is the product of meticulous work from the members of the atelier. Lawrence’s dress is made of artisanal silk moiré, a technique that involves pressing wet layers of fabric together under heat to produce a telltale rippling effect. The entire process to create the gown the actor chose for the Oscars took a whopping 1,500 hours of labor.
Print isn’t terribly common on the Oscars red carpet—stars tend to play it safe for Hollywood’s big night. But Lawrence’s criteria for her outfit is simple: when searching for a look she only needs “something elegant and timeless, that I won’t look back on with shock and dismay.” That’s a pretty reasonable fashion philosophy to us!
